Art of Server
United States
Приєднався 5 січ 2018
This channel is about servers, servers, and servers... well, okay, and server "related' things too. A while ago, I started an eBay store called "The Art of Server" (ebay id=theartofserver), and I was getting some questions from customers about various server building related topics, especially about IT mode HBA SAS controllers. After answering a lot of the same or similar questions, I thought, "why not make some videos about these questions?" So, here I am.
Hope you find these videos helpful for your server building projects! Happy building!

This past Monday, April 15th, 2024, the AlmaLinux project announced the release of AlmaLinux 9.4 Beta. As I was reading through the announcement, I noticed their statement, "Renewing support for upstream deprecated hardware." As I looked into it, sure enough, they are enabling the LSI driver support for some of the legacy LSI SAS controllers!!! I had been hoping that either Rocky Linux or AlmaL...

How to fix the elusive HP M 2 mounting screw problem

HP uses a very elusive M.2 mounting screw mechanism in their computers. Not only is it a very uncommong 1.6mm thread, trying to find a wide pancake head screw with a standoff of this thread size is almost impossible. So, when the HP M.2 mounting screw is lost, or perhaps the screw threads are stripped, it is difficult to find replacement parts to correct the problem. This is true for the HP Z T...
How to find LSI Broadcom HBA firmware files in 2023

People often ask me in the UA-cam comments, private messages, or other platforms how to find the LSI firmware for their HBA controller. The problem is that the broadcom.com website isn't the most user friendly. Also, Broadcom (Avago Technologies) has acquired many businesses in the past (including LSI Logic) that their product portfolio is so vast it can be difficult to find specific things. So...

Ha ha ha.. wow, you found one of my ancient videos! Hope it was interesting and welcome to the channel! :-)
@@ArtofServer 95%+ of tech / computer / app videos are all the same. Its nice to see something different. Enjoying myself here so far - thanks for the welcome......
will ZFSs arrays typically support 10GB ethernet transfers or 25GB links?
that highly depends on how you configure your ZFS pool, what type of transfers you are doing (sequential vs random, large blocks vs small blocks, etc.) and the performance characteristics of your storage devices.
the solder mask (green overlay on the pcb) can be different shades as they may use different bare pcb manufactorers depending on pricing. Even different lots from the same PCB MFG can be different shades. The best thing to look for is lack of ground vias in the counterfeit along with cheap chinese capacitors instead of better japanese ones
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Can I install an optical drive?
I don't know... can you?
I have this and and no screw. Been looking through my bit and pieces of computer parts but no luck. Thank you for the information 😊
Hope it helped! :-)
While this guide is helpful and makes alot of sense, Im having a hard time getting CentOS on a bootable OS like you have. Do you have a guide on how this has been done as it seems to have been glossed over
Actually, I do: ua-cam.com/video/laC7nsY1SyM/v-deo.html
sucks you can't do that to external drives anymore, they have started removing the sata interfaces
I can't quote statistics at the moment, but I've been very pleased with the apparent performance of the built-in LSI-2308 RAID controller on the Z840. There's also a built-in Intel with RSTe RAID controller that's supposed to be even more performant than the LSI controller on the Z840.
Indeed! The only negative I have about the onboard LSI SAS2308 controller is that HP cut half the PCIe lanes. It is a PCIe 3.0 x8 capable chip, but if you check, it is connecting at PCIe 3.0 x4. This is enough bandwidth for HDD and a few SSDs, but it won't be enough if you're using something like 8x SSDs.
Done loads of these back in the old days with the SAS2 cards I could do them with my eyes shut but I struggled a bit getting this one to work with the SAS3109 quirk Thanks so much for this video it helped me get me sorted
Glad this helped! :-)
$29 Australian eBay in 2024. I was shocked. Going to put it into my old HP Z 440.

Is it ok to run these in x4 mode pcie with spinning drives? I already have an lsi-9201-8i from your store. Looking to buy a 9207 for pcie 3.0 spec but still limited to x4 lanes. Thanks
yes, any of these PCIe cards can run at x1,x2,x4, or x8. of course, there will be limitations on I/O bandwidth based on how many PCIe lanes you have available. for spinning HDD use, you only need about 16Gbps, so PCIe 2.0 x4 is actually just enough. if you upgrade to a PCIe 3.0 9207-8i card, you'll have about 32Gbps in PCIe 3.0 x4.
@@ArtofServer thank you, I will be buying another 9207 from you for peace of mind.
The thing to bear in mind is that 92xx and 93xx are both regarded as "long obsolete" legacy cards by Broadcom and they've farmed them out to 3rd parties. Any new cards you may run across are OEM or _very_ old stock (at least a decade, maybe older) As a nice "bonus", these cards don't support ASPM and will keep your machine in higher power modes(*). That's OK in a server room, not so great for a SOHO server It's not just the power difference of the cards (1.5W/port in 92/93xx vs 0.5W/port in later models), but on my X10Dri motherboard I'm seeing the system base power load (no drives) almost double (50W to 100W) with 9200 or 9300s plugged in vs a 9400 9300 and earlier fusion MPT use a PowerPc core, 9305 and 9400 onwards use Arm core, which explains the power difference. Additionally the 9305 onwards support 24 ports natively so you don't have the kludge of the 9300-16's 2 controllers and a PCIe bridge bringing the things up to 25W/card (*) You _can_ enable L1 on 9300 series cards by forcing the OS and using setpci but you'll throw random intermittent SMART errors on a near continuous basis, so it's best not to do it Ok, that power difference is dwarfed by the 250W my (aging) 22 4TB HDDs are drawing, but as time goes by and they're replaced with fewer (larger) drives, it starts bcoming more noticable
what about the pdb i2c cable on non-SM mobos? No way to view/control the pdb if you're not use a SM mb?
Depends on the motherboard and if it has a PMBus connector.
Thank You very much!
Glad this helped!
Can you use this to say, see the VGA output for example if I were to install an OS on my server?
Yes, that's the point of the remote console.
I have two PowerEdge servers, R620 and R730XD. After booting, R620's fan speeds fall down to 20% (which is not noticeable at all), but R730XD's fans remain at 68%. It sounds exactly like a plane taking off. I'm unsure if it's because of a faulty sensor, but the temperature graph shows 27°C. To address this, I created a temporary VM inside the server to send an ipmitool command to manually set the fan speed to 20% after boot, which worked for me. I monitored the temperatures and they remained at 26-27°C. Now both servers are running at 20% fan speed and they are barely audible.
Glad you were able to find a solution! Thanks for sharing!
oh wow, i didn't know counterfeit cards were this common. I bought a cheap LSI 9200-8i in 2020. No clue if its counterfeit or not, luckily mines is still working and has been running 24/7 since the day I bought it.
i am testing a Fujitsu D3262-A12 Controller U.2 NVMe SSD card PEX8732 in this configuration, hope this work for get pcie3

wtf supermicro... but perfect timing. will swap a regular atx mobo in a supermicro case in the next month or so. Thanks for this instruction ! :)
glad this will help!

yup. easy
Do you need to utilize a Supermicro motherboard with a sas controller to be able to utilize the backplane ?
not a supermicro motherboard. but definitely a SAS controller.
Ya but that Fn key at the corner instead of Ctrl... =.=
exactly where it belongs.
Is there an HBA with internal and external ports? I have an mitx and it only has 1 PCIe slot, but I would like to add a DIY JBOD like this
Yeah, look at cards like the 9212-4i4e, 9217-4i4e, or 9300-4i4e as examples.
Does it be the case with cards labelled lsi 9270 cv 8i, I brought it from ebay and it didn't work in hp z420.
Maybe. Worth a try as HP machines always have the SMBus conflict.
@@ArtofServer thanks for replying, the card burnt up which is unlikely due to smbus issue within seconds, got refund and I was looking at one of your videos where you pointed out about counterfeit sas controllers and I think it's rampant. All fingers crossed. Will update, not many videos online though.one question though, Will lsi 9260 8i work by default in free nas or I need to reflash it? Or shall I stick to run it in the main windows machine? I don't do daily editing, just need backup of all the videos I shoot.
The music was good... the work was... eh... Just kidding! Thank for the video and the lesson!
LOL! thanks for watching!
Instead of using a screwdriver I'd recommend getting a pair of something like fish bone tweezers and bending the tips a bit, that way they work very similarly to something like a keycap puller!
Thanks for the suggestion!
Repairable ok we take that
Thanks for watching!
I did not know these were compression/sockets.
Thanks for watching! :-)
You'd think these were soldered in, I would...
Is this the same for 9860 servers? I mean powering up n checking or a diff method ?
I don't know what 9860 server means?
@@ArtofServer sorry, i meant dell xe9860- ua-cam.com/users/shortsxrumO8mdT1Y
Stumbled upon this when I found out the 9400 and newer Broadcom "HBAs" don't have the ability to directly pass the hard drives or SSDs on to the OS and so things like SMART and such don't work. 45drives recommends the 9305, so my question is what are homelabbers going to do when the stock of these older HBAs dry up?
I'm not really sure what you mean by "HBAs don't have the ability to directly pass the drives to the OS?" This video is not about HBAs. And my experience with newer broadcom HBAs (9600 or 9500 series) is contradictory to your statement. Also, SMART can work with either HBA or RAID controller. I've debunked that myth years ago in this video: ua-cam.com/video/BgOcCCAzHiY/v-deo.html Sorry, I don't get your question nor your point?
If I remember correctly most motherboards come with two ground pins for the power LED so it may be fine to just plug it in as is.
No they don't
If you plugged it in as is, only 1 pin would make contact. I don't think that would work.

Unfortunately, I'm not well versed with Windows. The only thing I could suggest is to make sure you have drivers installed for the SAS controller in Windows and that the controller is functioning correctly. Besides that, you might check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/1dCd6IepB5s/v-deo.html
@@ArtofServer i ended up giving up on the windows install Truenas worked first try
Thanks for the reply though <3
Have you tried it with 32gigs of ram? Thanx!
I have. but the modules are expensive.
Thank you for these.
no problem. glad it helped!
Each lane 25Gbit and the connector aggregate to 4x25Gb so if you try with 4 parallel you get the same results like 8 lane. Or up to the cable it's qsfp or osfp. That's why you don't get much than 25Gbit on one lane.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
If you want a cost-effective home server, get an HP microserver (G7). You can safely ignore the HP specs, I currently have two with 4x 6TB drives. One I have upgraded to SAS drives at minimal cost. As far as I can see, the only advantage of a Z840 (as a server), is that you can have four SAS drives without any other hardware changes. The downside is the cost of the electricity to run a high power workstation 24-7. PS I lust after Z840s, but not as servers.
thanks
You're welcome!
I might be the first to comment on your Lenovo Tracpoint Keyboard II 👌
??? confused. this is not the Lenovo keyboard video. And you didn't comment on that video either. But, welcome to my channel! :-)
As long as the card has a properly stitched ground with adequate amount of (max spacing in between the vias based on rise/fall time of return path) vias and correct spacing in between pcb layers
I have storcli installed, but when I enter the command storcli64 /c0 at the Linux Ubuntu prompt, it returns the error message "storcli64: command not found". The command: dpkg -l | grep -i storcli returns ii storcli 007.2908.0000.0000 all Storage Command Line Tool, manages storage controllers.
Wherever you have it installed, make sure that directory is also in your PATH environment variable.
@@ArtofServer Yes, that was the solution. I used the full path. For example "sudo /opt/MegaRAID/storcli/storcli64 -v" and it worked fine. Thanks much for your videos. They're super helpful.
So I tried the hack of no CPU and ram and I press power, nothing happens. When I go into ipmi and try and power on, I get please wait for a moment after acpi system status has changed. Help?

@ArtofServer l didn't order anything from your store but I have used R410 server and the default settings isn't working ( New IP is not Generated). I followed all the steps on your clip. I need your help on this and if something is required to be installed on it, I will buy.
Great video! I am pulling my hair out working with the CSE-846. Instead of swapping out the psu with 'less' loud psu, are the small loud fans in the psu swappable to quieter ones? Thanks!
There are already very quiet PSU options for this chassis. Look for PWS-920P-SQ in my ebay store. Much easier this way than trying to hack a regular PSU into this chassis.
So my X9DRi-F can run without CPU and ram? I plan to use my 4u as jbod as well
You'd have to try it out
